Invented by Taber in the early 1930’s, the Taber abrasion is an industry standard used in the wear and durability testing of ceramics, plastic, textiles, metals, leather, rubber, flooring, and painted, acquired and electro-plated surface, such testing aids in Accelerated wear test procedures using the Taber Abrasion are written into many of the test specications of the American society for testing and materials (ASTM) and other standards organization. The Abrasion Process
Samples of material to be tested are mounted on the abrasion's rotating turntable and subjected to the wearing action of two abrasive wheels applied at a specific pressure. A unique "X" pattern of abrasion an exclusive Taber feature, is produced by the rotary rub-wear action of the wheels. Wear action occurs as the wheels by the rotating sample. The axis of rotation of the wheels is displaced from that of the turntable so that a sliding action is generated as they rotate, abrading the material. An area of 30square centimeters or over 4.5 square inches is subjected to wear and a complete circle on the material surface is abraded at all angles of grain or weaves. Evaluating Test Results :
Visual End Point Method :
Certain materials are best evaluated by observing the point at which they undergo a marked change in appearance or break down physically, using this method, the number of test cycles recorded on the counter is a wear index (rate of wear) of the sample. Painted, plated, or polished surfaces, paper, textiles and fabrics best lend themselves to this method.
Weight Loss Method :
The weight loss method of evaluation is recommended when test results are to be compared with those of similar materials with about the same specific gravity. In this case, the Taber wear index is the loss of weight in milligrams per thousand cycles of abrasion for a lost performed under a specific set of conditions.
Volume Loss Method :
If wear resistance of a material is compared with that of one having a different specific gravity, then a correction for this difference should be applied to the weight loss in order to obtain an accurate indication of the relative resistance to wear.
Depth Of Wear Method :
It may be desirable after abrasion tests to measure the depth of wear. This can be done with a 125632 Optical Micrometer available as an accessory. The micrometer is precision calibrated in increments of one ten thousandths of an inch.
